Sweet sweet Act 2 progress! Jan 2025
January has been a pretty eventful month.
The old year bid us farewell as the electric grid of the entire town powered down as the result of an electrical transformer burning down. We were left mostly unscathed in this household, but I could hear neighbours talking about their appliances simply exploding. "Oh what fun it is", as the famous carol goes.
Work on Act 2 is now on full throttle! It took a bit more time to get the basic systems needed, but it is finally happening! In spite of starting the year off a spark (heh), and the electrical grid giving grievances once again during the last week, tilesets are ready, bgm is ready, and enemies... I guess I could afford to develop a few more. But let's go step by step.
The first new thing is a rudimentary save-load system.
I want to eventually update the system so it holds three slots, but for now, there's an unique savefile. If there is no savefile detected, the option to load won't even show. The load displays current playtime and the name of the area the save has taken place on. Saving will be a scarcy oppotunity as it will only happen in-between stages, so I figured calling them Interludes, was neat.
I probably should put something like a pedestal.
This is a planned feature for Interlude sections; the ability to choose which element you start with! Albeit knowing which is helpful or isn't is a wisdom that will come with time.
Another new addition to the game is... permanent powerups!
And also a sneak peek at the new act 2 bgm.
Your ability to find a permanent powerup will rely on the path you decide to traverse. Because this game has little to no use of invulnerability frames by design, I still need to settle on how much extra health a health powerup gives. Will you traverse the faster path, the harder one, or the easier one? Will you instead leave it to the whims of fate?
I want to leave Act 2 to be as much of a surprise as possible for the next demo (which I'm intending of releasing after the act is beatable!). In spite of switching to a monthly update schedule, this puts me kind of in the spot as I kinda want to share things as they come togetehr but also shouldn't. But if you crave moer info, you can always follow me on socials because I sometimes slip and post something I wasn't supossed to yet.
See you next month!
